On October 15, NACIS held its largest university fair since its founding. The admissions officers from over 140 universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong SAR and other countries and regions gathered at our campus, bringing students precious opportunities to communicate with the admissions officers in person.
On the day of the event, 190 teachers and students from The British International School Shanghai (BISS), Puxi, Nord Anglia International School (NAIS) Shanghai, Pudong and The British School of Nanjing (BSN) also gathered at the NACIS campus to take advantage of the cutting-edge resources offered by Nord Anglia Education. Our Grade 10 to Grade 12 students as well as some secondary families were present as well, exploring a wide range of future possibilities through in-depth conversations.
However, the value of a university fair goes far beyond the number of participating universities. It lies more in the growth and inspiration students gain from it. Also, it serves as a critical part of our university guidance system.
Connecting the World, Making High-quality University Resources Within Reach
What are the distinctive programmes of the university? How can students selecting different curriculum systems choose their majors? What kind of students do the admissions officers value? It is hard to find the complete answers to these questions merely through the information available on the official websites of the universities.
At the NACIS University Fair, admissions officers from universities all over the world engaged in face-to-face communications with students. From the curriculum settings, the major orientation to the admissions requirements and campus culture, they provided official first-hand information to students.
“The University Fair enabled us to go beyond the cold information on the website and communicate in person with the admissions officers.” Rachel, a Grade 12 student remarked. Instead of the publicly available information online, she was more eager to learn about the emerging research field, the specific admission criteria and how to choose suitable ECAs according to her application goals.
Grade 11 Katy, who is interested in anthropology and urban studies, had in-depth communication with the admissions officer from Tufts University to learn more about its undergraduate programmes, academic resources and future development possibilities.
From passively receiving information to actively asking questions, students are learning to make judgements about their future.
As the university options become increasingly diverse, NACIS always pays close attention to the evolving needs of students and families. For example, considering students’ interest in Hong Kong universities, this time, we invited representatives from the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and City University of Hong Kong to run a thematic workshop, sharing with students and families the strengths of the universities, the programme offerings and higher education opportunities. According to the UGC team, a total of 20 students from the Class of 2026 received offers from the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and City University of Hong Kong. Among them, 7 students were offered by the University of Hong Kong. This was undoubtedly a spectacular achievement in the fierce competition. This did not occur by chance. It was the inevitable outcome of our school’s far-sighted planning over the years.
The school will continue to invite representatives from universities worldwide to our campus to give lectures and run exchange activities, helping students and parents learn more about these universities' strengths, programmes and application requirements. At the same time, alumni now studying abroad will return to campus for the Alumni Sharing Sessions and Career Day to share insights into university study and life.
Starting from Grade 8, Making University Planning a Journey of Growth
The teachers from the NACIS UGC team shared with everyone a well-established and highly effective path: the school helps students gradually go through the entire process of self-recognition, goal setting and application through regular university guidance sessions, career exploration activities and phased personalized guidance. For NACIS students, this process of application is also a process of growth.
Starting from Grade 8, students are exposed to the real world of careers through Career Day. Parent Mentors from different fields come to our campus to talk about industry development and career experience, helping students build initial understanding of different fields.
For high school students, the university guidance gradually deepens.
- Grade 10: exploring direction. Students identify their personal interests and strengths. They start to think about the links between subjects and future development.
- Grade 11: narrowing down choices. Students further explore the university programmes, institutional strengths and curriculum requirements and gradually clarify their goals.
- Grade 12: completing applications. Guided by the University Guidance Counsellor, the students complete critical steps including university options, essay preparation, application submission and interview preparation.
This University Fair is also part of our university guidance system. This event has been expanded step by step from the UK University Fair, European University Fair to a global one. This time, the admissions officers from more than 140 universities across the United States, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong SAR, Australia, Canada, Europe and Southeast Asia came to our school. Before the event, the University Guidance Counsellors led the students to study the participating universities, sort out personal goals and prepare the questions for admissions officers. After the event, students were encouraged to summarize their takeaways, learn more about their target universities and continue their connection with universities through thank-you emails.
Ms. Vivian shared an example of a Grade 12 student who planned to apply to New York University Abu Dhabi. The student had prepared a detailed list of questions well in advance, hoping to leverage this opportunity to obtain more in-depth application information and gain more.
At NACIS, the University Fair is not simply a “stroll”. Instead, it is a learning practice with goals, preparation and follow-up actions.
Of course, for students in different grades, not every one of them has a clear understanding of themselves. According to Vivian, this is normal. At NACIS, there are a wide range of Extracurricular Activities, sports teams, performing arts teams and interdisciplinary projects available, providing students with abundant opportunities for diverse exploration. Accompanied by the career assessment tools and the professional guidance of the University Guidance Counsellors, students can understand themselves more clearly through repeated attempts.
Tailoring Approaches to Each Student, Making Every Application Showcasing a Unique Self
What makes an applicant stand out?
According to the admissions officer from Boston University, challenging academic programme is no doubt important. However, universities place equal emphasis on students’ leadership skills, commitment to community service and artistic talents.
He encouraged students to authentically present themselves in application essays and extracurricular activities and find what truly ignites their passion and drives their growth.
The admissions officer from Ohio State University also pointed out that in addition to students’ academic performance, universities also value their comprehensive abilities developed through sports, clubs and other activities.
This aligns perfectly with the personalized university guidance philosophy that NACIS upholds. The goal of university guidance is not to turn every student into the same kind of applicant, but to help them find and fully demonstrate their own strengths.
Personalized support is far more than academic development and application essays.
Our Grade 12 student James is fond of music, especially bagpipe and piano. When he was preparing for the university application, the school not only supported him to use the theatre for rehearsal but also provided him with the resources from the primary recording studio to help him complete the recording of the portfolio.
These forms of support, though seemingly small, enable students' long-term interests and talents to be showcased to universities in a well-prepared and authentic manner.
As James said, the school’s resources were valuable for his application preparation. He encouraged the younger students to make full use of these opportunities.
From the professional counselling to the coordinated support from the academic team and then to the flexible use of campus resources, NACIS is committed to helping every student find a path that suits them, turning personal passion and academic pursuit into a driving force for their future development.
For students who are about to enter the application season, the path to university is inevitably accompanied by choices and challenges. While striving for their dreams, they will also harvest self-growth throughout the process. This is the value of university application. Over 140 universities gathered at NACIS, marking a global encounter and a starting point for the future.
From self-discovery to global connection, from discovering passion to making firm choices, NACIS hopes that every student can, with ample resources and professional support, fearlessly move toward their own broad future.
