Building the Curriculum - Looking Back on a Journey Guided by The Juilliard School
When it comes to arts education, one cannot help but mention a world-renowned institution - the Juilliard School in the US. As a long-standing partner in K–12 education, The Juilliard School and Nord Anglia Education have worked hand in hand since 2015, marking a decade of collaboration. In February 2025, NACIS strengthened the partnership by signing a strategic cooperation agreement with The Tianjin Juilliard School - the first and only overseas campus of The Juilliard School. This milestone signifies a deepened and more integrated collaboration between The Juilliard School and Nord Anglia Education across China.
Ms. Sarah’s connection with The Juilliard School is a defining chapter in her teaching career. In her second year at NACIS, she travelled to New York to attend Juilliard’s training programme, and in June this year, she set foot on that ground of artistic wisdom again. These two experiences not only allowed her to witness Juilliard’s development over the decade but also reshaped her understanding of teaching. Juilliard’s advanced teaching framework - beginning with a well-designed entry point to engage students, guiding them into deeper learning, encouraging collaboration, and culminating in reflection and dialogue around masterworks - opened a new door for her. Each stage of the process reflects Juilliard’s emphasis on artistic experience and the commitment to the essence of arts-based inquiry. The open-ended nature of Juilliard’s curriculum, free from “standard answers,” liberated Ms. Sarah from the confines of traditional teaching models and made her realise that the performing arts classroom should be a space for free expression and creative exploration. Over the past ten years, Ms. Sarah has adapted Juilliard’s philosophy and standards and built a comprehensive primary performing arts curriculum. Grounded in classroom and supported by her team, she has placed students’ needs at the centre of her work, ensuring that Juilliard’s educational principles are embedded in every lesson. The result is a curriculum that meets national standards while embodying an international perspective, planting seeds of artistic sensitivity and appreciation in every child’s heart. Whether in the spontaneous band rehearsals that fill the music room with rhythm or the confident Friday Forum performances that light up the stage, the spirit of art has become part of daily life at NACIS.
Through the long-term partnership with The Juilliard School, Ms. Sarah has grown from a recipient of ideas to an active contributor to refining and co-developing curriculum. Over the years, she has collaborated with numerous Juilliard specialists in dance, drama, and music, engaging in in-depth discussions about lesson design and implementation. Her insights such as the need to enrich singing components for younger students were incorporated into subsequent revisions of Juilliard’s curriculum, which includes a more detailed vocal instruction framework. The meaningful dialogue has extended her influence beyond classroom practice to the broader level of curriculum co-construction, effectively bridging cutting-edge university-level approach and primary education.

Building the Team - The Growth of the Performing Arts Team as a Testament to Leadership and Cohesion
From only two primary music teachers at the founding in 2016 to a team of sixteen highly skilled and diverse professionals today, the NACIS Performing Arts Department has experienced remarkable growth and transformation over the past decade. Ms. Sarah has witnessed the evolution firsthand, as the team has developed into a comprehensive faculty encompassing music, drama, theatre, and film across both primary and secondary. The creation of a complete curriculum and the establishment of a strong team from the ground up represent not only years of dedication and perseverance but also the collective pride and achievements of Ms. Sarah and her team.
In the first half of 2025, eight NACIS PA teachers led workshops at the Teacher Conference in Beijing. Later this year, five more delivered workshops at the Guangzhou conference, further demonstrating the team’s expertise and leadership within Nord Anglia Education (NAE) China. Through their outstanding performances and contributions, the NACIS PA team has distinguished itself in NAE events nationwide.
Moreover, among 50,000 participants in the NAE Global Campus Young Musician, the NACIS PA team - led by Ms. Sarah - was awarded the Best Organisation Award, recognising their exceptional capability in event coordination and execution on an international stage.

Bearing Fruit - A Stream of University Offers and Competition Successes
In academic development, the Performing Arts Department focuses on three major disciplines - music, drama, and dance - while also integrating musical theatre and regular performance activities to meet the diverse needs of students across different year levels and subject areas. After a decade of continuous refinement, our students have begun to shine in university admissions. Offers from top US universities include Su Yanming and Zhao Ruocheng admitted to New York University (NYU), Qin Yijia admitted early decision to Swarthmore College, and He Zhongjing admitted to Emerson College. All of them have honed their talents on the NACIS stage, particularly in theatre, musical performance, and the newly established IB Film course. Moreover, Zou Qiyang, who was admitted to Wesleyan University, ranked 11th among the Best National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News Report, participated in over 30 performances during his six years at NACIS. Through his outstanding academic achievements, wholehearted dedication to his passions, and selfless commitment to serving others, he achieved a breakthrough in admissions to top-tier liberal arts colleges. After receiving early admission from Wesleyan University, he chose to spend a gap year at NACIS following his Grade 12 graduation, to give back to his alma mater for six years of nurturing. The decision exemplifies the essence of our educational philosophy, which not only emphasises academic excellence, but also the cultivation of social responsibility and a global outlook - a philosophy that finds its natural fruition in his choice.
Since its founding, the NACIS PA ECA programme has expanded from just five activities to twenty-eight by 2025, reflecting both scale and depth. Performance formats have evolved from single ECA showcases to two major annual productions - the Winter Show and Summer Show - Each showcase lasted up to approximately 3.5 hours, with the number of online and on-site viewers for the major performances reaching as many as 50,000.
NACIS students have also excelled in arts competitions in Minhang, winning gold medals in instrumental, choral, and dance categories, and advancing to the Shanghai municipal finals. These achievements highlight the students’ strong artistic foundation and professional competence. In the Trinity examinations, our students achieved outstanding results, underscoring consistent excellence in performing arts education.
Building a Warm Community - A Stage of Connection Between Home and School
While dedicating herself to students’ artistic development, Ms. Sarah also extended her attention to the parent community, playing a key role in establishing the Parent Choir. “Parents were curious about why their children could enjoy so many performance opportunities at school, and they longed to experience the same joy of artistic learning themselves,” she explained. Motivated by the shared curiosity and enthusiasm, Ms. Sarah and Ms. Marija initiated the Parent Choir. During weekly rehearsals, both teachers offered patient, professional guidance while parents encouraged one another and refined their vocal techniques. Over time, the Parent Choir has become one of the most celebrated and applauded parent communities on the NACIS stage. Likewise, the Parent Dance Troupe has impressed audiences with its graceful and energetic performances, becoming an iconic part of collective memory. The success of the Winter Show and Summer Show each year is also inseparable from the parents’ wholehearted support. In this sense, the stage has evolved beyond a mere performance space - it has become a shared, symbiotic community co-created by families and the school, filled with warmth, collaboration, and mutual pride.

The Past Is a Prologue - A Future Full of Promise
Over the ten-year journey, Ms. Sarah has grown from a primary music teacher into one of the core leaders of our Performing Arts team. Beginning as a subject teacher and homeroom teacher, she took charge of choirs, external performances, student competitions, and collaborations with local cultural initiatives in Minhang District. Meanwhile, as a leader of Primary Music, she demonstrated strong academic leadership, excellent cross-cultural communication skills, and deep professional commitment within an international faculty.
Ms. Sarah’s personal growth over the decade also parallels the ten-year partnership between The Juilliard School and Nord Anglia Education. Guided by Juilliard mentors and nurtured by the NACIS community, she has pursued both vision and grounded practice - dreaming ambitiously while working steadfastly. Her expertise has flourished, leading her from a classroom music teacher to the Assistant Director of Performing Arts. During these ten years, Ms. Sarah has witnessed and contributed to countless transformations: from the early establishment of the Performing Arts curriculum to deep collaboration with Juilliard; from exploring music teaching within classrooms to recreating Broadway-style musicals on stage. The NACIS Choir and Orchestra have performed at venues such as Shanghai Concert Hall, Panlong Tiandi, and Shanghai Disney Resort, leaving memorable footprints across the city. As students spontaneously play the grand piano in the NACIS atrium, the melodies flowing from their fingertips reflect not only technical skill but also a genuine love for the arts and the confidence to express emotion through music - a spirit deeply cultivated within the NACIS community.
Art, at its core, is never merely art; it teaches us to perceive and express the beauty of life with sensitivity and grace. When we give art golden wings, it carries us to broader horizons and deeper self-discovery. The ability to feel art, like the air we breathe, is essential. When art becomes part of one’s inner being, it enriches the soul and nurtures a more profound, refined, and beautiful experience of life.

Standing at the threshold of NACIS’s 10th anniversary, Ms. Sarah looks toward the future with hope and determination. Her “small goal” is to continue delivering every Performing Arts lesson with excellence, ensuring that every child receives meaningful artistic inspiration. Her “greater aspiration” is to make Performing Arts a universal language through which NACIS students can connect with the world and to see NACIS arts education shine even more brightly in the decade ahead. As she said: “This is where dreams begin. We will continue to create more stages for our students, allowing the flowers of art to bloom in every child’s heart - endlessly and brilliantly.”
